Herbal Research

Herbs provide a natural appeal to nature for our health. Prepared correctly, herbal medicines can treat a range of human and animal health issues (in animals, behavioural problems can be treated with herbal preparations).

Natural Organic Herbs and Organic Herbal Products often have soothing effects, and can typically effectively treat a range of health issues without the damaging and irritating side effects often associated with drug therapies. However, herbs can also be very strong in their impact and, as such, need to be prescribed after consultation with a qualified Herbalist or Naturopath. This is especially so when herbal preparations are taken together with other medications (such as nutritional supplements or orthodox drugs). Note the web page titled: Research of Herbal Medicines and Natural Remedies in terms of this precaution.

Natural Organic Herbal medicines need to be individually fitted to each person and the context of their life. Prior injuries, genetic disorders, other medications used, and overall current health status all need to be factored into the selection of appropriate herbal medicines.

Essentially, a detailed case study is required. Each individual is an individual, and their health and toxicological story will be distinctive (the path to health often has many toxic episodes inserted in it). And while modern science (which does not necessarily have all the answers) informs medicine on human health and disease states, science and other beneficial philosophical approaches inform the evaluation of the person seeking out more natural ways of advancing their health. Instead of (often) toxic medications being prescribed, the Naturopath may prescribe Natural Organic Herbal Products, homoeopath remedies, various types of massage, and nutritional remedies or supplements.

The body’s internal systems and state of health are often found to be represented on the outside of the human body. One such external and visible “map” is found in the eye. Iris Diagnosis (or “iridology”) is a useful tool that modern medicine, in its myopia, tends to reject. However, read correctly, the eye (along with other external parts of the body) can provide a great deal of information about the internal goings-on of the body.

Naturopaths use various systems of human health diagnosis to specialise in many different areas, e.g. weight management and fertility, and emotional, digestive, hormonal and respiratory conditions. Natural weight management balances one’s diet, which leads to an increase in the feeling of well-being and energy levels. Fertility treatments are not just focused on herbs. These treatments also look at chemical poisoning, a global problem that can interfere with natural conception. I have personally studied Acupuncture. I can attest to its great benefits, especially in terms of treating emotional disorders (Dr. John Veltheim 1981, pers. comm.).

As well, Acupuncture is recognized by the WHO as being effective in treating the following disorders:
• Adverse reactions to radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy
• Allergic rhinitis (including hay fever)
• Biliary colic
• Depression (including depressive neurosis and depression following stroke)
• Dysentery, acute bacillary
• Dysmenorrhoea, primary
• Epigastralgia, acute (in peptic ulcer, acute and chronic gastritis, and gastrospasm)
• Facial pain (including craniomandibular disorders)
• Headache
• Hypertension, essential
• Hypotension, primary
• Induction of labour
• Knee pain
• Leukopenia
• Low back pain
• Malposition of fetus, correction of
• Morning sickness
• Nausea and vomiting
• Neck pain
• Pain in dentistry (including dental pain and temporomandibular dysfunction)
• Periarthritis of shoulder
• Postoperative pain
• Renal colic
• Rheumatoid arthritis
• Sciatica
• Sprain
• Stroke
• Tennis elbow (WHO, 2012 [http://apps.who.int/medicinedocs/en/d/Js4926e/5.html; accessed: 1 March 2012]).

Remedial Massage and Lymphatic Drainage Massage (both of which I have also studied) provide tremendous benefits for the body. Massage can often provide superior ‘healing’ to the use of needles in Acupuncture, especially when people may be reluctant about having needles inserted (Dr. Brian Liu 1987, pers. comm.). Herbal Teas, Flower Essences, Homeopathy and many other disciplines can add valuable approaches to your personal health. They are all worth investigating. However, if funds are limited for this kind of personal and one-on-one approach to health, then these web sites can start you on the road to discovering better ways of getting positive responses from your body.

The Advanced Diploma of Western Herbal Medicine web page states: “Herbal medicine in western civilisation began millennia ago. And your career as a qualified practitioner in the field begins right now. Ever more popular in our health-conscious society, western herbal medicine combines centuries of accumulated knowledge with modern technology and ideas” (accessed: 2 March, 2012). Natural Organic Herbal Products have come to us by way of ancient tradition and also by way of a developing modern aversion to the toxicities of chemicalized drug medications. Herbal Medicines, Natural Organic Herbal Skincare, Aromatherapy Essential Oils, and Organic Haircare are today becoming the preference for millions worldwide.

Even modern medical research is showing an increasing preference for drug therapies offering less toxic side-effects. Note that the MAILMAN RESEARCH CENTER Bio-Organic and Natural Products Research Laboratory web page states: “Over the past decade, research on possible pharmacotherapies for the treatment of alcohol and drug abuse has burgeoned. For instance, naltrexone, an opioid receptor antagonist, was recently approved in the United States for the treatment of alcohol-dependent patients. However, naltrexone can produce liver toxicity, and compliance has been a problem. Therefore, a greater research effort is needed to develop agents with less side-effect liability. Our strategy is to investigate Chinese herbal remedies traditionally used for the treatment of alcohol and drug abuse” (accessed: 2 March, 2012).

The Taylor & Francis Group publishes the Natural Product Research Journal. “The aim of Natural Product Research is to publish important contributions in the field of natural product chemistry. The journal covers all aspects of research in the chemistry and biochemistry of naturally occurring compounds. The communications include coverage of work on natural substances of land and sea and of plants, microbes and animals. Discussions of structure elucidation, synthesis and experimental biosynthesis of natural products as well as developments of methods in these areas are welcomed in the journal” (accessed: 2 March, 2012).

Further, the Natural Products Utilization Research Unit states: “The mission of the Natural Products Utilization Research Unit is to develop natural products for uses in agriculture in order to produce more toxicologically benign pest management tools and to improve the nutriceutical value of crops.”

So, good science both recognizes the toxic liabilities built in to modern chemical engineering and its synthetic drug products, and the more reliable pharmaceutical properties inherent within anciently prescribed and institutionalized herbal products. Chemical engineering is the new kid on the block. Together with orthodox medicine, pharmaceutical transnational corporations have usurped millennia of herbal traditions by flooding the western consciousness with the ready convenience of medications. These toxic drugs not only put all the power of prescription into the hands of an overly educated medical elite (doctors and specialists), but also replace, drain away and wholly delete ancient knowledge from any reasonable situation within science-indoctrinated modern minds. Indigenous societies and their ancient funds of knowledge are being wiped out, and western minds are being force-fed an overly technological approach to thinking. What should be a spontaneous and “natural appeal to nature for our health” goes wanting. Organic herbal medicine (natural medicines and natural remedies) knowledge can’t be recalled when ancient cultural knowledge has experienced the pervasive and genocidal impact of a profit-fuelled modernity intent on totalitarian supremacy.
